There are various types of halibut pellets available, black and brown, hard and soft, high oil and low oil. Daniël van Dijk (Holland) I'm Daniël van Dijk, working as a town planner for the local government of The Hague. I was born in 1974 in Dordrecht. Not many years later my father took me to the water and I was caught by the fishing fever. It was in the year of 1987 when I started hunting specially for Carp. At first in the little city waters, later also in the Dutch rivers using the Richworth 50/50 ready-made base mix. As soon as I got my drivers license, a new world of possibilities opened up. From that moment the Carps in France become a serious goal, making use of Ready-made boilies like Tutti Frutti and Crab & Mussel. The last years other countries like Italy, Spain and England produced my first carps. Since the ready-mades of com-plex got available, I'm using them with very got results. Last Christmas day I caught my first Dutch "Christmas-thirty", a 35 lbs common, on a 14 mm com-plex boilie. This year I got my first results on the new Ultra-plex and Tiger Nuts ready mades. Next to enjoying the many adventures near the different waters in Europe, I also like the write about it in the Carp magazines. Bas Timmer (Holland). As can be expected, angling plays a major role in my life. Not only carp, predatory fish also warmthen my hart. Being Dutch this means mainly pike and in Holland we are fortunate to fish for huge pike in so many different types of water we can catch these green monsters the whole year around. Lures are my favorite bait and trolling my favorite method. I like a bit of adventure in my fishing, no matter what species are being targeted. My greatest adventure was endured in Egypt. Fishing Lake Nasser for Nileperch is an intense experience, especialy after landing a 145 lbs Nileperch. The sheer strength and power of this fish I will never forget. I still feel the pain in the lower part of my back playing this fish. Most of my carpangling nowadays brings me to France. Carp the much desired prey. The early part of the nineties brought me nothing but hardship and disappointments. But after a while, that turned out to be several years, the experiences started to pay off. I was actually starting to catch carp in mainly small sizes on mainly undiscovered waters. I kept on going and the sizes kept growing making me a happy angler. Untill I changed jobs, leaving a carp-only tackle shop, my new job allowed me to spend less time on the banks. So my fishing changed, from pursuing big carp it turned to leisurely angling, the target having a good time. My baits changed too, no more hours in a stinking kitchen rolling baits, I changed to the brand where quality counts. And somehow(or logically?) these bags started to perform miracles. Crab & Mussel are my favorites, I have lost count on the number of carp me and my mates caught on this fine bait. The greatest miracle, carpangling wise, came in 2004. Some handfuls of 20 mm Crab & Mussels underneath a Complex pop-up produced me my finest hour as a carpangler and strenghtening my motto: "When in doubt, buy confidence in a bag!"

These baits are made in the same way as normal shelf-life baits and by using exactly the same ingredients. They are 14mm in diameter and about 20mm long, thus having a larger surface area than a 14mm boilie so the leak-off of flavour and attractors is greatly improved. Because of the dumbell shape, it is more difficult for the fish to eject the bait, and we have also found that on harder fished waters the fish are less likely to be spooked by picking up a dumbell than a boilie as it is not used to the shape. Air-drying is a great way of preserving your bait. This method can be used on freezer baits and boilies made using base mixes. When air-drying frozen boilies you must make sure they thaw out in their bag completely first. There are two reasons for this, one is that they will dehydrate and the other is that the ice in the bag contains additives and nutrients that are re-absorbed during the thawing process. The best way of air-drying baits is to use a drying tray which are available from most tackle shops with instructions, but alternatively you can dry them on a towel in a warm, dry place, (an airing cupboard) or in a pillow case and hang it up. It is important to remember that the boilies must be shaken/moved about during the drying process otherwise mould could form. Never put too many boilies in at a time when drying to allow adequate air flow around the bait.

Jan Keijenberg (Holland). Bonjour! I'm Dutch but since my parents'family stems from Belgium, I am raised in a more bi-lingual fashion. Fishing for carp is one of my passions, the other one is music. I hold a degree in music and am always frustrated to find that it is impossible to get any degree in angling. My profession is civil servant, specialised in trafficand parking. In my spare time, I am the sportive type. I like soccer and fitness and carpfishing off course. I've been fishing for all my life, hunting for several species. At the age of thirteen I became particulary interested in carp fishing. Er bestaan diverse vormen van de karper: de wilde of boerenkarper de schubkarper de edel- of spiegelkarper de rijenkarper de leder- of naaktkarper de kroeskarper de hoogvinkarper de graskarper de grootkopkarper de zilverkarper De verschillen worden met name bepaald door het schubbenpatroon; de schub- en wilde karper zijn normaal beschubt, de spiegelkarper kent enkele grote schubben, de rijenkarper een rij schubben horizontaal over de flank en de lederkarper heeft slechts enkele schubben (daar waar geen schubben zitten voelt de huid "leerachtig" aan. De kroeskarper heeft een wat hoog en gedrongen postuur en wordt in het algemeen niet zo heel groot. Tevens is deze karpersoort vrij zeldzaam. De graskarper wordt ook wel "Chinese karper" genoemd en heeft een torpedovormig lichaam. Zijn bek staat anders vergeleken bij de andere karpersoorten. De graskarper voedt zich ook wel zoals zijn naam al doet vermoeden voor een gedeelte met gras. De grootkopkarper heeft zoals de naam al zegt een grote kop. Deze karper is zeldzaam en is moeilijk in Nederland te vangen. De zilverkarper is zaols de naam al zegt: zilver van kleur maar behoort niet tot koikarper. Ecologische waarde De karper is net als de brasem een vis die de bodem omwoelt, dit noemt men azen. Vooral in de vroege ochtend direct na zonsopgang kan men dit waarnemen. De vis staat dan vaak rechtop in het water en door het gewoel in de bodem ziet men afhankelijk van de soort bodem trossen kleine dan wel grotere belletjes opstijgen naar de oppervlakte. In ondiep water kan men soms aan de staartvin zien om wat voor vis het gaat. De karper doet dit als hij op zoek is naar eten, voornamelijk planten en waterinsecten. De karper is geen roofvis. De karper als exoot Aanvankelijk werd hij als consumptievis ingevoerd. Waarschijnlijk is dit begonnen in China waar monniken karpers kweekten voor voedsel. Deze exoot heeft Nederland bereikt dankzij de Romeinen. Met name in Noord-Holland zijn afstammelingen van deze (ontsnapte) exemplaren te vinden. Dit zijn de zogenaamde wilde karpers of boerenkarpers die van vroege ontsnappingen afstammen. Tegenwoordig wordt de karper regelmatig uitgezet ten behoeve van de sportvisserij. Uitzetten blijkt veelal noodzakelijk omdat de omstandigheden (temperatuur, roofvissen, beroepsvisserij) van het Nederlandse water niet optimaal zijn voor voortplanting. Karpervissen is sinds begin jaren negentig erg populair geworden vanwege de kracht en omvang (gewicht) van de dieren. Na alle uitzettingen en voortplantingen komt de karper in het grootste deel van Noord- en Midden-Europa voor. Na 1870 werd de vis naar de VS overgebracht, waar hij nu algemeen voorkomt. In de natuur kan hij 30-40 jaar worden. De karper als siervis Meestal wordt de term Koi(-karper) gebruikt voor de gekweekte fel gekleurde variant die als siervis in vijvers wordt gehouden. Deze vissen worden, afhankelijk van de kleur en de tekening, soms voor grote bedragen verkocht. Met name in Japan is het houden en kweken van Koikarpers als populaire bezigheid ontstaan. Ondertussen zijn er Europese en Israëlische varianten die respectievelijk EuroKoi en Israëlische Koi worden genoemd. Enkel in Japan zelf betekent het Japanse woord Koi (karper) de "consumptievis-karper", terwijl Nishikigoi verwijst naar de sierkarper. Wereldrecord De grootste karper tot nu toe is gevangen door Nick Massey op het Paquier des Graviers in Frankrijk en woog 37,65 kilo. Een vis van meer dan 35 kilo is zeldzaam.

Sylvain Schumacher (France). Hello there, My name is Sylvain Schumacher and despite bearing the same name....me and Michael do not have the same nationality. I was born and live in France, as you all know, one of the best countries for catching carp. My fishing started at the age of 5 and today, being nearly 38, it still is as strong as ever. Living in the immediate neighbourhood of one of France's most prolific big carp rivers, I've landed many, many big carp and only recently (may 2005) managed to land a new PB from the river: a gigantic mirror of well over 66 lbs. The bait: you've guessed it, Crab & Mussel 18 mm. My favourite baits are much in line with Cor's and Bas' choices: Crab & Mussel and Tutti Frutti. Although Nini also prefers Complex when tackling the big Madine lake. Nini is our benjamin in the Team, als living in France and already landed fish over the magical 30 kg barrier from Madine. You'll find more on Nini in his section on this site. Working in shifts often permits me to be at the waterside when all is quite, and most of my best catches are in the early morning hours. Cor and I spent some time fishing a couple of lakes and we compared notes from our fishing logs....interesting, most of our catches from my region are between 5 and 8 in the morning. Cor de Man (Holland). My name is Cor de Man, 41 years of age and carp fishing since the age of 15. Looking back that puts me in pursuit for the beauties for well over 25 years, how time flies! My day to day job is challenging but also finishes at 5 in the afternoon, leaving ample time to visit the gym, play with my child and worrying about where to fish next! Occasionally I'll also produce an article for one of the many magazines we have nowadays. I've fished for and caught carp all over the world, all on Richworth boilies. Without a doubt my favourite bait is the ever constant Tutti Frutti boilie in 18 and 20 mm. To give you an indication of its catching power: amongst other carp, the bait brought me a 43 pound common in South Africa, a good catch of thirties from the St Lawrence river, some nice twenties in Spain and a substantial amount of big fish from all over France. Since becoming a father, some 7 years ago, my fishing changed and now includes my son as a companion on many trips. This does, however, limit my fishing to places that can be considered to be safe for such a young child and excludes the toughest of venues. Still, the catching continues and some very nice fish came our way in the last couple of years. Fishing more on enclosed waters, lakes and venues under 200 acres in size, I found that Complex and Crab & Mussel boilies have the tendency to 'build up' in action throughout a longer session or a season. The forte of Complex seems to be its ability to single out the bigger carp, especially when fishing close in, with only a handful of baits and some pellets around it. The results can be quite staggering, as the picture proves. A very nice common, at a nudge over 40 pounds from a tranquil lake in Northern France.
